Open Interactivity Project

Use whatever software necessary to create an internet artwork capable of generating a near-infinite number of outputs. Choose ONE of the three following options:

A. Generative/Reactive Software Series:
Creat a series of 5 softwares that react to user input. The softwares should be visually or conceptually related to each other. The visuals should move. Audio is optional, not required.

B. Database Software:
Create a software that accesses source visual elements from a database (or directory) and re-assembles them in a near-infinite number of ways based on user input. The visuals need not move. Audio is optional, not required. [Note: If you use the bubblegum template, you need to do a series of at least 3, and connect them somehow.]

C. Game environemnt:
Creat a navigable environment (3D or 2D) which the user can explore along a near-infinite number of paths. The environment should represent reality in an interesting but not necessarily direct way, and/or it should invite user participation and modification. Audio is optional, not required.

Create a directory in your "sites" folder called "open" and upload your project to that directory. Your start page should be labeled "index.html" Your project should appear at http://mmas.unca.edu/~youruserid/open/

If there are any special technical instructions necessary for the user to navigate the project, these should be included at the beginning.

General Requirements:
1. must be comfortably surfable via cable modem (no pages/files over 2Mb)
2. must work in at least Mac OSX Safari and PC Ineternet Explorer 6.

Grading criteria:
1. meets above requiremets
2. design aesthetics (color, use of space, movement, audio, framing/presentation)
3. interactive aesthetics (reactivity, variability, usability)
4. thematic consistency and originality (how well do your pieces/iterations relate to each other? does the sequence build in an interesting/appropriate way? is the whole more than the sum of its parts? originality [code & concept])

Suggestions:
1. Use software that you enjoy using or want to learn.
2. Surf the examples and get a feel for what works in this genre.
3. Visuals are important. Narrative is less important.
