3. JUNE 3 Contre nature [François] (BOZAR) How to fill a big space with a solo show? How does one accumulate and accrete meaning throughot a larger show? (repetition and difference: of materials, forms, ideas). What was the tone? (serious? funny?) What was the point of the camera taking a clear picture through the cloudy glass when your eye saw a cloudy image? (human bodies have subjectivity. technology is not purely subjective either.) Why the soccer balls and leather jackets? Why the cheap materials (styrofoam, plywood)? (because all materials are "natural.") Is there any material that is "unnatural"? What do we mean by "unnatural?" Why were the backsides of the pieces exposed? (even the substrate of the diramas was also made of materials, wood). Why leave everything so approachable and (almost) touchable? Some titles "wax revenge," "sand revenge." What do these titles imply? (like materials trying to figure out what humans mean by "natural.") ////////////////////// MAGRITTE MUSEUM: Why all the multiple versions of the same scenes and themes? Why does he not paint more realistically? What is the relationship between his brushstroke and his goals? How many ways is this not a pipe? What is "this"? What is meant by "is"? What is meant by "not"? What is "a pipe?" What is the relationship between language and imagery? Between a painting of a pipe, a photograph of a pipe, the word pipe, an object called a pipe? Semiotics: What is a sign? (saussure: sign = signifier + signified). Peirce (adds referent [person interpreting the sign in a given situation]). What is a calligram? Why is it called "the treachery of images?" How are Magritte's paintings "surrealistic"? What is "realism"? What is the difference between mimesis (imitation) and simulation? (latter has endless referent). How are Magritte's paintings about painting? (pointing) What do magritte's paintings show? (They show the act of hiding.) What would the experience have been like without the wall titles?
