Don't worry; Be happy

What God's doing in my life.
It seems a fundamental thing.  I used to make light of the don't 
worry be happy song, but I'm beginning to embrace at least the 
first part of it.

What am I afraid of? (realistic, honest)--
God will be displeased with me and punish me because I am lazy.
Physical pain -- as in running.
Someone will misunderstand me or misrepresent me to others, 
particularly that parents of my students will misinterpret me.
I will lose control in my classroom and my students will no longer 
respect me or obey me. (nightmare fodder)
Someone will take advantage of me, and I'll have no  recourse --
employers, landlords, a student harrassing Julie anonymously on 
the phone.
Money for a lot of people.
Inability to provide for family for a lot of men.

-- Is our God big enough to deliver us from these things?
-- Will he?

Faith that God is powerful in a general, impersonal sense is merely 
good theology, and will not decrease my current anxiety level at 
all.  This general faith in God's power is useless unless I also have 
faith that God can and will deliver me in the present situation, 
here and now.  --me

Oswald says that our battle is not even our deliverance from the 
current crisis.  That's God's battle.  Our battle is -- will we trust 
God and not worry in our current crisis?

[The life of the Son of God in you] is nourished by refusing to 
worry over anything, for worry means there is something over 
which we cannot have our own way, and in reality is personal 
irritation with God. -- Oswald

Worry is sin.  We are commanded by Jesus to not worry.  We are 
not commanded by Jesus to not get in a bind.  Getting in a bind is 
not sin, but worrying about the bind we're in is sin.

Phil: 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!   5 
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.   6 Do not 
be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and 
petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.   7 And 
the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard 
your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.   

Don't worry about your life, don't fear them which kill the body; 
be afraid only of not doing what the Spirit of God indicates to you.

Matt. 6:24    "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the 
one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and 
despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. 
Matt. 6:25    "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, 
what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will 
wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more 
important than clothes? 
Matt. 6:26   Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or 
store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. 
Are you not much more valuable than they? 
Matt. 6:27   Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his 
life? 
Matt. 6:28    "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the 
lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 
Matt. 6:29   Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor

This is the kind of treatment we can expect in the world, and how 
we are suppsed to react to it.
Matthew 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following 
instructions: "Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of 
the Samaritans.   6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.   7 As you 
go, preach this message: `The kingdom of heaven is near.'   8 Heal 
the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out 
demons. Freely you have received, freely give.   9 Do not take 
along any gold or silver or copper in your belts;   10 take no bag 
for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker 
is worth his keep.   11  "Whatever town or village you enter, 
search for some worthy person there and stay at his house until 
you leave.   12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.   13 
If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let

God wants to bless us
Zeph. 3:8 Therefore wait for me," declares the LORD, "for the day I 
will stand up to testify. I have decided to assemble the nations, to 
gather the kingdoms and to pour out my wrath on them-- all my 
fierce anger. The whole world will be consumed by the fire of my 
jealous anger.   9  "Then will I purify the lips of the peoples, that 
all of them may call on the name of the LORD and serve him 
shoulder to shoulder.   10 From beyond the rivers of Cush my 
worshipers, my scattered people, will bring me offerings.   11 On 
that day you will not be put to shame for all the wrongs you have 
done to me, because I will remove from this city those who rejoice 
in their pride. Never again will you be haughty on my holy hill.   
12 But I will leave within you the meek and humble, who trust in 
the name of the LORD.   13 The remnant of Israel will do no 
wrong; they will speak no lies, nor will deceit be found in their 
mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them 
afraid."   14 Sing, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad 
and rejoice with all your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem!   15 The 
LORD has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your 
enemy. The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will 
you fear any harm.   16 On that day they will say to Jerusalem, 
"Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands hang limp.   17 The 
LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great 
delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over

The secret of Christian quietness is not indifference, but the 
knowledge that God is my Father, he loves me, I shall never think 
of anything he will forget, and worry becomes an impossibility.
